Australian Kurdish Women Swimming Group
WaterMarc were approached by an amazing group of Kurdish women from the Australian Kurdish Group, who were looking to overcome their fears of water and to improve their health and fitness through swimming. These women were all very new to the aquatic environment and had a number of barriers to work through both physically and culturally prior to beginning swimming lessons.
The lack of encouragement, with family not supporting their swimming due to strong cultural values, being a Muslim group was a big factor. They felt their age and minimal experience was stopping them from learning to swim. However, they were determined to improve their abilities so that their children would be proud of them and they could have the freedom to attend the beach with family and feel confident.
Over the last few weeks, these women have had the opportunity to learn and grow with their instructor Julie who has provided support and guidance in swimming and water confidence. WaterMarc are thrilled to be part of this journey with these women and are hoping that the Belgravia Foundation can assist in making a difference in these women’s lives.
“On behalf of all the ladies in the Australian Kurdish Group, thank you for the wonderful support you give us. The ladies are very happy with the facilities, centre and the nice attitude of the members. The trainers are really good and supportive.” Khalida, Australian Kurdish Group Leader.
